Ages ago, IQ is used by psychologist to measure human intelligence. Back in the early 20th century where France started to use this score for children having difficulties when starting to go to school. By then on, it was widely spread in any parts of Europe, America and in Asia. Known people with high IQ such as; Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk and many geniuses’ people we know. Sure they did an amazing job, discoveries, and inventions in the world. When it comes to going to school or looking for jobs before, people prefer someone who is intelligent enough. They favour more with someone graduated with honours. I remembered when I applied for a job for the first time so much exams and I am never good at it. I feel exhausted answering hundreds of questions and in the end I haven’t heard anything after that. Sure, competition and the style of hiring were a bit daunting. Then, I started to think; Am I not good enough because I do not have high IQ? It could be that it’s a cultural thing that we are accustomed to this kind of measuring someone’s intellect to do the job and only be given an opportunity to life? But things have changed. High IQ doesn’t equate success all the time. And success is not only influenced by high intelligence quotient but rather involves with our own personal style. As what Albert Einstein said “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change”. People change and learn too due to many factors, for instance, environmental factors where people can learn with different strategies in life not based on rules, not based on how much IQ you have. As we grow older, IQ decreases slowly due to chemical reaction to our body and the brain deteriorates. I am not disqualifying IQ to people who have one just because I am not. This is to introduce to you the significant to have an Emotional Intelligent (EI) than IQ. It was never known before as IQ is more popular and more accepted. I have encountered many intelligent people but low or none in EQ. I am sure you encountered too in school, at the workplace or hanging out with different people or friends not to mention even with your relatives and family. There are misunderstanding, misinterpretation, perplexity and loads of disorder. But what does it mean by Emotional Intelligence and how useful it is to our daily lives?
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand and handle our own emotions and those people around us. People with high EI are more self aware of their feelings and use it in a positive way to manage stress and to communicate properly and effectively. Most of them can read peoples’ minds through a pattern of behaviour. Sometimes, it is a bit tiring too when you always understand those who do not have EI even a little. Many companies are now adapting to practice self-awareness as we are all human being and it is important to recognise that we are all different people with emotional need. Not just companies but all of us should adapt to it to live a healthier life. Here are some 4 traits to know a person is highly emotional intelligent. There are loads but these are to summarise of all.
1. Confidence- and not arrogance. Takes time to have self- assurance. It takes loads of experiences and to have the right attitude. How confident are you as a person in general? In your own skin, your profession, your way of living, in making decisions. Confidence is like affirming yourself that you are doing well and making it right and even if they don’t like you, you are confident because you are working something within yourself and building your self-esteem and belief in your own ability and caring for your well-being, adopting positive outlook in life. Some people have confidence by their titles or how much money they have and how much wealth they accumulated and comparing to someone who do not have as much as they have. That’s not confidence. Confidence requires emotional strength and it shows in your aura without you telling people. And it is attractive.
2. Tenacity- I was many times criticised of my determination to do things beyond my capability. But I was never discouraged to go out from my comfort zone alone. I do not live in life for survival only but I always believe that life has meanings and purpose and only you who know the reasons behind your determination and persistence. So don’t quit whatever it is you are doing and don’t listen to an idiot who knows nothing but criticising. I am sure they are envious of your will-power and strength in which something they don’t have and wish they have the courage to do so. Ask those successful people about their secret- it’s simply tenacity.
3. Enthusiasm- As Winston Churchill said “Success consists of going to failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm”. Have you or are you experiencing in life that anything that you are doing even in the midst of difficulties you are still eager to continue without losing your interest to do something? It is because you know what you are doing and where it is heading. It might be impossible to many people but a high EI person never loses the excitement to keep going. And that’s mostly innate character but can be learned.
4. Optimism- having a positive outlook in life is good to our mental health even to your physical functioning. People who have high EQ always see possibility and opportunity in every situation. If something is difficult, they find a way to have a solution. They could think of other ideas not just one. They always have options. They can see things and think that mostly typical people couldn’t see. Their perceptions in life are not seeing things only of what you are destined but going to that destination you have so many ways and those ways are your choices.
As we are all experiencing this pandemic, practice self-awareness. It is not only beneficial to you but also to others. Please do not take it as something negative or being emotional is weak but to some extent- a strength. It creates power. Most people desire to be with someone with high EQ than IQ. Being mentally stable balances life.
